ABOUT: Ocean jasper is not a jasper at all, it is technically a spherulitic variety of chalcedony. Spherulitic is a term for the orb-like structures you can find in ocean jasper. Ocean jasper was first discovered in 1922, but no information was recorded on its location except that it was found in Madagascar. In 1950, a piece of ocean jasper was brought to the Museum of Sciences in Paris, France, but disappointment loomed as it was also not given a location of discovery. Then, in 1997, Paul Obenich of Madagascar Minerals spent 45 days looking for the location of ocean jasper on the Madagascar coastline, and finally discovered it. The location is only visible during low tide, which made the search for this mineral’s location a challenge. Ocean jasper was then brought to the Tucson Gem Show in 2000, and was an instant hit. In 2006, the mining site that was discovered by Obenich in 1997 was deemed depleted, meaning all the ocean jasper in circulation today is all there is.

SPIRITUAL/HEALING PROPERTIES: Ocean jasper is known to help release worries or pain that reside deep within one’s heart, and helps one vocalize and move on from these emotional issues. It can help one heal and find resolution with their emotions, relationships, and even with themselves. It has been suggested that one should keep ocean jasper with them whenever discussing sensitive feelings that you may be avoiding or hiding as it helps one communicate heavier subjects more freely. Because of this, it is also suggested to bring a small piece of ocean jasper to therapy sessions to help one open up about past trauma.
