ABOUT: Fluorite (also known as fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride. The word fluorite is derived from the Latin verb fluere meaning to flow. Fluorite has been used in iron smelting as a flux to help decrease the viscosity of things like slag. In 1852, fluorite gave its name to the phenomenon we know today as fluorescence. Fluorescence is prominent in fluorites from certain locations due to impurities. Fluorite forms as a late-crystallizing mineral in felsic igneous rocks, typically through hydrothermal activity. Fluorite is allochromatic, meaning its color can be tinted with impurities. Because of this, fluorite comes in a wide variety of colors, and has been dubbed “the most colorful mineral in the world”. The color of fluorite is determined by a few factors, such as impurities and exposure to radiation.
