ABOUT: Lepidolite is a lilac-gray or rose colored member of the mica group of minerals. It is the most abundant lithium-bearing mineral and is a secondary source of this metal, and is also a major source of the alkali metal rubidium. Lepidolite is found naturally in a variety of colors such as pink, purple, red, and less commonly in gray and yellow. Trace amounts of manganese cause the pink, purple and red hues. In 1861, Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered lepidolite. It was originally known as lilalite due to its color, but was later renamed lepidolite from the greek word “lepidos” which means “scale” due to its scaly appearance caused by the flakes of lithium within.
