ABOUT: Poppy jasper is a kind of brecciated jasper native to the Santa Cruz mountains of California; more specifically, the city of Morgan Hill. Formed long ago as a product of seismic activity, the stone gets its brown, red and black hues from elements blending and hardening into quartz. Poppy jasper contains hematite, which is an iron compound that gives it the red tones you see throughout. Poppy jasper can also sometimes contain clear crystal inclusions.The colors within this variety of Jasper resemble that of a poppy flower, which is how it got its namesake. It’s a type of orbicular jasper, put into this category of jasper due to its colorful sphere-patterns. Ocean jasper is another example of a type of orbicular jasper. Poppy jasper is predominantly red (thanks to the inclusion of hematite) with black and red circular markings all over it.
